USCIB is a "pro-trade, pro-market liberalization organization [with an] active membership base of over 300 multinational companies, law firms and business associations." It is the "U.S. affiliate of the International Chamber of Commerce, the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD and the International Organisation of Employers."

The lasting value of the Norms [UN Norms on business & human rights] exercise...is that it has brought the human rights responsibilities of business to the top of the agenda from which they cannot be removed. It will now depend on the statesmanship of all concerned, and in particular of the business community, to ensure a positive outcome. If the issue is fudged, or shrouded in repeatedly extended dialogue; worse, if the debate is terminated with no outcome, we will all be the losers. But the main loser will be the corporate world which will be seen to justify the prevailing belief that it puts profit before principle.

There is much that business has done and can do to help promote respect for human rights, but such efforts cannot replace the singular role of the State in implementing and enforcing national laws on human rights. States have and must retain the sole responsibility to implement international human rights laws and cannot shift that responsibility to companies.
