Title: Apathy Follows Man-Made Narmada River Disaster [India]
Author:Ranjit Devraj, Inter Press Service Dated:14 Apr 2005
Anti-big dam activists are livid that authorities are still trying to evade responsibility a week after at least 65 people drowned in waters suddenly released from the Indira Sagar dam in the Narmada Valley of central India...Officials of the state-run Narmada Hydroelectric Development Corporation (NHDC) [joint venture Madhya Pradesh Govt. & National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC)], which operates the dam said they were unaware of the ritual bathing on the rocky river bed. To make matters worse NHDC's partner, the Madhya Pradesh state government, seems contented with just an internal inquiry.
Hundreds of wailing pilgrims have lined the banks of a holy river in central India praying for loved ones after more than 150 people either drowned or were missing when the gates of a nearby dam were opened...officials at the Narmada Hydroelectric Development Corporation (NHDC) [joint venture NHPC (National Hydroelectric Power Corporation) & Madhya Pradesh Govt.], which operates the dam, said they were not aware of the Hindu fair downstream.
