[DOC] Response of McDonald’s to articles about Coalition of Immokalee Workers campaign for living wage & working condition standards among tomato suppliers
Author:
McDonald's
Dated:
10 Jan 2006
Our company, as a food-service retailer, cares very much about the policies and practices of our suppliers. That is why we have a long-standing Code of Conduct well-integrated into our supply chain system... Additionally, over the past several months, we’ve been seriously engaged in discussions involving a number of opportunities and solutions with different parties including our suppliers, industry groups and advocacy organizations such as the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. These discussions have led to McDonald’s active support and endorsement of the newly-created “Socially Accountable Farm Employers” (SAFE) code of conduct for the tomato industry... SAFE is one of the first agriculture programs that provides verifiable protection for workers.

Author:
Kari Lydersen, New Standard [USA]
Dated:
Having forced Taco Bell [part of YUM!] to pay tomato pickers a penny more per pound, a farmworkers' organization in southern Florida [Coalition of Immokalee Workers, CIW] is pressuring McDonald's for a similar agreement. But the group charges that the fast-food chain has attempted to circumvent the campaign, instead signing on to a corporate responsibility pledge [Socially Accountable Farm Employer certification programme, SAFE]...the CIW says that after several talks with McDonald's officials, they have made little headway. Company representatives did not return any of several calls about this issue...In interviews with The NewStandard, the two organizations participating in SAFE acknowledged that so far no workers have been involved in the initiative, but said a diversity of groups will be represented by board members. They would not, however, specifically say that workers would be included.

Kalinga Nagar project: Land offered to Tata Steel by the state had been acquired by the latter some 10 years ago, but the 750-odd villagers had not been rehabilitated or removed. Upon finalisation of the MoU between Tata Steel and the state , the latter began negotiations/operations with the inhabitants. Last week’s unfortunate event was a consequence of the government’s actions in trying to get the land vacated. No officer of Tata Steel was present, nor was there any other involvement from the company, which resulted in police firing, etc.
