[The following summary translation of a statement in French was prepared by the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre:] In 1986 and 1990, Chevron, operating in the Muanda coastal region, buried toxic waste near the village of Kaï Tshianga... The waste was buried in a ditch about...12 metres deep... Beginning in January 2007, Chevron dug up these substances, whose composition and environmental impact have not been determined... No steps have been taken to bar local residents from accessing the site. We have seen children playing [there]... We demand to know the exact composition of the waste in these containers and for its impacts on the environment and the health of local population to be assessed.

En 1986, puis quatre ans plus tard en 1990, la société pétrolière Chevron Oil opérant dans le littoral maritime de Muanda, avait enterré des déchets toxiques à proximité du village Kaï Tshianga... Ces substances ont été enfouies dans une fosse de plus ou moins...(12) mètres de profondeur... Depuis le mois de Janvier 2007, Chevron Oil a entrepris de déterrer ces substances dont la nature exacte et l'impact sur l'environnement restent à déterminer... Nous avons observé qu'aucune disposition n'a été prise pour interdire...l'accès de la population à ce site abandonné... Nous avons remarqué des enfants jouant...sur le site... Nous exigeons que la nature exacte de ces déchets soit connue et que l'ampleur de leur impact sur l'environnement et la santé des populations locales soit établi. [Le Centre de Ressources sur les Entreprises & les Droits de l'Homme a invité Chevron à répondre.]

The waste excavated at the Kaitshanga site (Site) consisted of used drilling mud, drilling mud additives, and various oilfield products composed of hydrocarbons and surfactants. This was confirmed by laboratories in the DRC...as well as an off-site laboratory located in Chemex London, UK... The waste was disposed of at the Site under the oversight, approval, and direction of the Ministry of Environment. Prior to the start of the work to remove the waste and impacted soil, an environmental impact evaluation was prepared under the direction and oversight of the Ministry of Environment... The excavation was then backfilled with clean soil... Throughout the project, Chevron Oil Congo SARL has also provided information to members of the local communities and continues to provide them with information on a regular basis... Several social projects requested by the local community leaders are also underway.
