Introduction

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre maintains this portal for materials relating to the work of the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative on business & human rights, John Ruggie.  It includes all materials published by the Special Representative and his team, as well as commentaries on his work.  It is made possible by a grant from the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.

John Ruggie was first appointed as Special Representative in 2005.  The UN Human Rights Council renewed his mandate in 2008 for a three-year term.  The details of his mandate are available here.  (Full bio here.)

Introduction by the Special Representative to his work [DOC]

Framework: Protect, Respect, and Remedy

John Ruggie has proposed a policy framework for business & human rights based on three pillars: the state duty to protect against human rights abuses by third parties, including business; the corporate responsibility to respect human rights; and greater access by victims to effective remedies.  For a one-page explanation of the framework by John Ruggie, click here [PDF].  Ruggie originally elaborated the framework in his 2008 report to the UN Human Rights Council.
