Bahrain: Migrant workers live in overcrowded inhumane camps lacking safety measures

"Camps ‘disasters waiting to happen’", 9 Apr 2021

Dozens of workers were found living perilously in overcrowded rooms, amid dangling power cables, as officials launched surprise visits to labour accommodations in Budaiya yesterday.

Exposed gas cylinders, randomly strewn wooden planks and lack of fire extinguishers were among other violations registered at the camps.

The inspection was spearheaded by Northern municipal councillor Mohammed Al Dossari, who was accompanied by officials from the Ministries of Health and Interior, the Civil Defence, the Northern Municipality and the Northern Governorate.

“These labour accommodations are disasters waiting to happen because they lack the basic safety measures. Workers are living in inhumane conditions,” said Mr Al Dossari, who is also the area councillor.

“Electrical cables are faulty or have not been properly connected. Garbage is strewn around while make-shift kitchens have been made with plywood.
