Latin America: Report on rights violations in Chinese investment projects to be taken into consideration by the Committee on ESC Rights

... CICDHA's contributions are considered for the List of Questions that the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) will present to the Chinese government in the framework of the third periodic report of that country ... In the context of the work with UN human rights mechanisms, the Collective on Chinese Finance and Investment, Human Rights and Environment (CICDHA), other regional civil society organizations and the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR), jointly presented last December a report to the Committee on ESC rights on violations of economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR) in 8 projects with Chinese investment in 7 countries of the region. These projects are located in indigenous territories, in protected areas or in areas declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO... The main points of this report were directly communicated to the Committee on ESC rights in the formal session of March 9th by the representative of the CICDHA, Julia Cuadros of CooperAcción (Peru)... In her intervention, she encouraged the Committee to include questions related to the regulatory frameworks through which the Chinese State prevents and responds to ESC rights violations committed extraterritorially by companies and financial institutions under its jurisdiction.... The organizations of CICDHA encourage the Chinese State to take concrete actions to change this situation. Likewise, we encourage the Committee on ESC rights to continue to take into consideration the concerns of Latin American organizations in the formal review session and in the Concluding Observations...
