Argentina: Contamination of the Corfo Lagoon (Chubut) is allegedly linked to fishing industry activity

...A lagoon in Argentina’s famed Patagonia region turned bright fuschia last week, alarming residents as photos of the neon waters went viral around the world. "The coloration is due to a preservative called sodium sulfite,” Argentina-based environmental engineer Federico Restrepo told the AFP. The antibacterial chemical is used in preparing shrimp and prawns for exporting. Fish factories in Argentina’s Chubut province, near the Atlantic Ocean, are being blamed for contaminating the Chubut River that flows into the Corfo Lagoon, which suddenly became highly photogenic in the worst way last week...The latest brightening came as a result of overheating tensions between industry and local communities. In the neighboring town of Rawson, protestors fed up with the fetid smells of fish processing and associated pollution blocked the route of trucks carrying fish waste through town to a treatment plant...Local environmental activist Pablo Lada told AFP the local government is ultimately responsible for failing to uphold laws that require treatment of such liquids before dumping. "Fish processing generates work... it's true. But these are multi-million-dollar profit companies that don't want to pay freight to take the waste to a treatment plant that already exists in Puerto Madryn, 35 miles away, or build a plant closer”...
