Attempt to end strike turns bloody [Mexico]

Hundreds of police officers stormed a key steel plant in the state of Michoacán on Thursday, attempting to clear out striking workers and touching off a bloody battle that killed at least three people, authorities said. The clash at the Sicartsa steel plant...saw police fire tear gas in an attempt to evict workers who seized the facility to protest a change in the leadership of their union...A union statement said 800 officers entered the plant and killed at least two workers...The plant is owned by Grupo Villacero, whose finance director...said that even though the company viewed the work stoppage and plant takeover as illegal, company officials had not asked police to step in.
