Ecuador: Indigenous people and rural communities initiate protest “National March for Water” against EcuaCorriente and other mining companies

“National March for Water begins” – 4th November 2018

As it was hoped from the beginning, after the announcement in June by ECUARUNARI and the Farming and Indigenous Communities of Azuay (FOA for its Spanish acronym), in the context of the National Conference against Mining held in Cuenca about their intention of marching to defend water and life against mining, finally the date arrived.  On two occasions the largest national mobilisation in years of indigenous people, rural farmers and those affected by mining was proposed.  Today, the 4th November, hundreds of protesters (others are expected to join on route) will march towards Quito from the emblematic place where large scale mining projects have taken over territories, wounded many people and violated the human rights and the nature of those who live in lands such as Tundayme. This territory was defended by shuar indigenous tribes and mestizos for many years against mining that has targetted the ancestral shuar territory for decades. Around this mining project the killing of José Isidro Tendetza Antún was decided.  He was one of the opposers and shuar leader who organised and coordinated territorial defence strategies against the Chinese metal mining company (ECUACORRIENTE (part of Corriente Resources, part of Tongling Nonferrous Metals & China Railway Construction Corporation in Ecuador) that constructed the most important gold and copper project in the country in the middle of the Amazon.
