Qatar 2022 World Cup: Hotel reportedly booked by Brazil team linked to supplier associated with labour abuse; incl. response from CBF

In November 2021, as the first 13 teams qualified to participate in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited the Confederação Brasileira de Futebol (CBF) to respond to an article reporting that the Brazilian team plan to stay at the Westin Hotel, Doha during the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The Westin Hotel historically used a security contractor, GSS Certis, which has faced allegations it housed workers in poor and cramped conditions. Malcolm Bidali, the migrant worker who raised these concerns was later detained in retaliation for writing publicly about these issues. The Westin is a Marriott International branded hotel; Marriott's response regarding its previous contracting of GSS Certis can be read here. More information can be read on the webpages below:

We invited CBF to set out the human rights due diligence they undertook prior to booking the Westin Hotel and to disclose any actions they have since taken. While CBF did provide a response, they did not outline taking any human rights due diligence steps. Their response can be read in full below.
