Japan: Canada Pavilion at Osaka World Expo 2025 allegedly failed to inform staff of labour agreement about overtime work as mandated by law

[Unofficial description by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]
At the Canada Pavilion of the World Expo 2025, the labour union "General Union" called on a staffing agency representative to improve working conditions after staff were made to work overtime without being informed of the labour-management agreement, known as a "36 Agreement," regarding overtime work, as legally required by Japan’s Labour Standards Act.
Around 30 staff members working at the pavilion, including Canadians, are members of the union. They reportedly received a written notice of the agreement only after raising concerns with the company about how their overtime pay was being calculated.
The union has also submitted formal requests to both the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition and the Embassy of Canada. As of the 16th, the company had not responded to the inquiries.
