Bolivia: Report denounces three cases of rights violations at the UPR to China

"Shadow report: Bolivia brings three cases of rights violations to the Universal Periodic Review to China"-21 March 2022-....

...In the case of Bolivia, three cases have been documented as part of the report entitled "Human Rights and Chinese Business Activities in Latin America" that will be launched on 23 March at a parallel event to the 49th UN Human Rights Council, in the framework of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of China... Among them, the cases of the Rositas and Ivirizu hydroelectric plants, as well as the Mutún steel project, stand out in Bolivia...The report denounces that the Mutún steel project, financed by the Export-Import Bank of China and promoted by the Chinese company Sinosteel Equipment & Engineering Co. Ltda. (Sinosteel), mainly affects the Otuquis National Park and Integrated Management Area, Bolivian Pantanal (Ramsar site) and Chiquitano Dry Forest and the Chiquitano and Ayoreo indigenous peoples, as well as the seven peasant communities that live in the area...

Another reported case is that of the Rositas hydroelectric dam, financed by the Export-Import Bank of China and executed by Asociación Accidental Rositas (AAR) together with China International Water & Electric, China Three Gorges Corporation and Empresa Constructora Reedco SRL. This multiple mega-project would affect 23 Guaraní indigenous communities that inhabit the Serranía de Iñao National Park and Integrated Management Area (IMNA), the Río Grande Integrated Management Natural Area (IMNA) and the Parabanó Municipal Protected Area...The third case analysed in the international report is the Ivirizu hydroelectric project... This project is being promoted by the Chinese company Sinohydro Corporation Limited, and financed by the Empresa Eléctrica Valle Hermoso EVH with its own resources...
