On 21 March 2019, the president of the Fuerabamba Peasant Community, Gregorio Rojas Paniura, was arrested with the community vice president Edinson Vargas Huamanga, the secretary Nohemi Portilla Vargas and his legal counselors. The charges against them were extortion and organized crime to the detriment of the Peruvian State and the Chinese mining company MMG Las Bambas. On 29 March 2019, Gregorio Rojas Paniura was released after the prosecutor did not find proof that Gregorio was part of a criminal organization.
