Human Rights and Labor Activist Fr. Christopher Hartley Urges Corporate Executives and the European Commission to Ban Future Sugar Purchases from the Dominican Republic

...Fr. Hartley has written to company executives at major European sugar refiners, Tate & Lyle, St. Louis Sucre and Tereos, urging them to examine their stance on human rights in light of recent purchases of Dominican sugar under the new Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the EU and African Caribbean Pacific (ACP) nations. Fr. Hartley also contacted the European Commission regarding ... allowing procurement of a product grown and harvested by human beings who lack basic rights... To date, none of the three companies has agreed to accept Fr. Hartley's challenge that they "take the lead" and boycott Dominican sugar for as long as human rights and labor violations remain in effect. [also refers to Grupo Vicini]
