Amidst a record-breaking heatwave across Europe, delivery company Glovo (part of Delivery Hero) allegedly offered bonuses to its delivery drivers in Italy "incentivising" working in extreme temperatures. Many of the riders are migrants from South Asia and Africa.
“Offering financial incentives [to induce] fragile migrant gig workers without a proper contract to ride at higher temperatures is incorrect and unacceptable” -> Roberta Turi, a senior leader of the CGIL labour union.
The company said the extra money was to support riders with additional costs, including water, sunscreen and rehydration salts.
The scheme was criticized by Italian labour unions, who said it encouraged gig workers to ride in extreme heat.
Following outcry against the scheme, the company said it would pause it for deliveries “made in the hottest slots of the day”.
