Japan: Expo Union reports unpaid wages and unagreed salary deductions at four pavilions

Anschuldigungen

"「複数のパビリオンで給料未払いなど法令違反」 万博関連ユニオンが発表 一部労使争議も," 29 September 2025

[Unofficial description by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

The “Kansai Expo Union,” a labour union formed by staff working at the Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, has revealed that it has received reports from at least four pavilions regarding unpaid wages and salary deductions without agreements. In some cases, labour disputes between workers and employers are already underway.

Some part-time workers reported that their wages had not been paid, or that their working days were reduced after they pointed out the non-payment. Others said they were required to work more than 10 hours of overtime per month without receiving overtime pay.

The contracting companies have reportedly promised to pay the outstanding wages, but have not specified when or how much will be paid.

Kansai Expo Union has urged the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition to investigate working conditions at the Expo site and to ensure that all pavilions and contracting companies comply with labour laws.
