Major fossil fuel companies allegedly engaged in decades-long disinformation campaigns on the climate impacts of burning fossil fuels; incl. co. responses and non-responses
A report by the Union of Concerned Scientists alleges that fossil fuel companies, including Shell, bp, Chevron and ExxonMobil, were aware for decades that burning fossil fuels contributes to climate change.
The report alleges further that the fossil fuel industry took "extreme steps" to misrepresent the climate impact of carbon emissions from fossil fuels to the public. These measures include allegations that ExxonMobil, working with lobbyists, DCI Group, were involved in hacking the email accounts of activists working to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for their role in exacerbating climate change.
Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Shell plc, bp, Chevron, ExxonMobil and DCI Group to respond. Shell and bp responded to the allegations. Chevron, ExxonMobil and DCI Group did not respond to the allegations.
