On 15 November 2023, land rights defender, Maribel Díaz García from the farmers' association Agua Blanca Sur, which is affiliated with the National Center of Rural Workers (CNTC) in Honduras, was detained and accused of the crime of intrusion (usurpación). She was released later in the afternoon. The next day, the national police and security guards from the sugar company AZUNOSA displaced 60 families from the region.

On 4 December 2023, another member of Agua Blanca Sur, Jensy Manzanares was detained.

On 30 September 2023, two members of the National Center of Rural Workers (CNTC) leaders, Cándido Santamaría and Marvin Ávila were accused of the crimes of aggravated usurpation and aggravated damages against AZUNOSA.

PBI-Honduras has noted that it “is concerned about the criminalization and persecution of defenders of land and territory and the evictions of entire campesino communities. We highlight the work of campesinos in favor of food sovereignty and environmental protection. Likewise, we applaud the work of CNTC Progreso in the defense of human rights and land and territory.”

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre contacted AZUNOSA. The response can be found here.
