The French energy group is accused of being responsible for deadly gas explosions in the country. Before Emmanuel Macron's visit on Friday, families gathered in front of the French embassy.
Four wooden crosses and four photographs of young people aged 18 to 25 were placed next to the logo of French company Engie. Flowers, candles, food, garland and incense surrounded these portraits, creating an offering to honor the dead as in Mexican tradition at this time of year. The memorial was set up directly in front of the French embassy's gates in Mexico City, beneath French and Mexican flags and facing a row of cameras, just four days ahead of Emmanuel Macron's planned visit to Mexico on Friday, November 7.
The offering paid tribute to the four people killed and five seriously injured after gas explosions caused by leaks in distribution networks operated by Engie. On the megaphone was Salvador Martinez, brother of a survivor of a gas explosion. His 36-year-old sister Thalia had over 70% of her body burned in June 2023 in Matamoros, on the US border.
This mother of three survived against all odds, but still faces 15 further surgeries in Dallas, Texas, after already enduring 22 major operations.
