"Workers demand resolution of labor rights violations", 31 July 2024

Dongxin Garment Co., Ltd., located at No. (-), Nawaday Road, Zone (3), Hlaingthaya Township, Yangon Region, is accused of failing to explain labor laws to workers, not allowing them to respond to leaders' arbitrary insults, and prohibiting them from filing complaints with labor offices. If found guilty, they will be fired. Workers say that the factory is making it difficult for workers to make inquiries through supervisors and the employer-selected Labor Coordination Committee (WCC).

The factory said that it did not allow workers to choose the WCC [member], [and] only the employer-selected person was voted in. The current WCC team is said to be doing nothing to solve the problems of the workers and is only doing what the employer says.

The first WCC team was selected to help solve the problems of the workers, but a WCC member was dismissed from work without any reason before the WCC term (2) was completed, and the case is currently being resolved at the Labor Mediation Office...

Workers say that if they have a fever, they will take medicine and [the factory will] only ask them to take a short break at the infirmary. The workers said that the factory infirmary does not have enough medicine, [and] when workers ask for sick leave, they often do not get it.

The factory has many daily wage and monthly wage workers, and they are fired after a few orders because they are afraid of being hired permanently, according to a girl who has been working for more than 6 months.

The factory ignores the requirement to sign an EC contract within 30 days of the date of joining the factory according to the labor law, and the boss's female interpreter also fires those who try to sign a contract.

The workers also said that HR, some supervisors...and some clerks...are forming a group to...fire the workers if they find out that the factory is currently...violat[ing] labor rights...

On 23.7.2024 at 3:30 PM, during a meeting, the factory said that the workers' mobile phones will be confiscated...

Some workers have openly stated that they are suffering a lot because their employer does not speak Burmese, and because the employer's wife interprets for them...
