Peru: Southern Copper allegedly violently displaced and illegally detained community members occupying Cuajone mine facilities

Red Muqui

Peasant communities of Tumilaca, Pocata, Coscore and Tala denounced that 60 security workers of the mining company Southern Copper, a subsidiary of Grupo Mexico, violently evicted and illegally detained 20 community members who were taking over the water installations that supply the Cuajone mine in protest against plans to expand the project's production capacity. According to the communities, the expansion would result in an even higher demand for water and the contamination of the Torata River. At least one community member was injured in the action.

BHRRC invited Southern Copper to comment on the incident; the company did not respond.
