Philippines: Three farmer-activists opposed to entry of mining & plantations gunned down in Southern Mindanao

"3 farmer-activists gunned down in Davao Region", 13 June 2018

Human rights group Karapatan reported that victims of extrajudicial killings in Southern Mindanao region under the Duterte administration has reached to 78 as three farmers were killed by unidentified gunmen in separate incidents....

Jay Apiag, spokesperson of Karapatan Southern Mindanao, identified the victims as 29-year-old Nestor Dagatan Sacote, 45-year-old Lando Perdicos, and 54-year-old Jovie Jose.

He added that Sacote was an active member...has been vocal against militarization of communities in the province.

Perdicos...was active in joining rallies against militarization and supported agrarian reform beneficiaries protesting to reclaim land occupied by Lapanday Foods Corporation....

...Apiag said they are still gathering more information regarding the shooting incident involving Jovie Jose....

Pedro Arnado, chairperson of KMP-Southern Mindanao, attributed these killings to the peasants’ strong opposition against militarization of communities and entry of big mining companies and plantations in their area.
