Puerto Rico: Government climate lawsuit against major oil companies

On 17 July 2024, Puerto Rico filed a climate lawsuit against major oil companies BP, ConocoPhillips, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell plc, TotalEnergies and Chevron Phillips (joint venture of Chevron & ConocoPhillips). The lawsuit alleges that the companies did not provide warnings about the environmental risks associated with burning fossil fuels, despite the companies knowledge of these risks. Puerto Rico seeks damages of at least $1 billion. However, on 6 May 2025, amid similar losses in climate lawsuits relying on state law, Puerto Rico decided to drop the case.
