S. Africa: Tendele Mine – Response to Allegations Published by Mongabay
We categorically reject the allegations that our operations are causing environmental harm, damaging homes, disrupting schools, contaminating livestock or drinking water, or causing respiratory illness. These statements are not supported by any evidence and have been repeated for several years by the same external organisation on behalf of a small number of community members, which has brought separate court applications against the Mine. In every case, these applications were dismissed, with courts repeatedly finding no basis for the allegations.
… Tendele does not conduct mining or blasting within 500 meters of any occupied homestead. All activities fully comply with statutory buffer zones prescribed under the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), the approved Environmental Management Programme (EMPr), and the conditions of the Mining Right. No blasting is permitted until all affected households within the regulated distance have been relocated through a lawful, negotiated and documented relocation process. All mining, blasting and heavy operations comply fully with the minimum regulatory blasting distances, and all affected households were part of a lawful relocation and compensation process.
… Tendele remains committed to transparent, responsible and lawful operations. When concerns are raised, they are formally investigated and feedback provided to complainants accordingly. The mine continues to engage constructively with community structures, schools, livestock owners, community leadership and residents to ensure that operations coexist safely with surrounding communities.
