S. Korea: Death of presenter sparks concerns over workplace harassment at MBC

[Unofficial translation provided by the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

“MBC weathercaster workplace harassment death suspicion... "investigation will begin at the request of the family”, 30 January 2025

…Following allegations that the late MBC weathercaster, the late Oh Yo-Anna (aged 28), who passed away last year, had suffered from workplace harassment, MBC has stated that it will launch an investigation “at the request of the bereaved family.”

MBC commented, “If the deceased had officially reported any grievances related to workplace harassment or, even in the absence of a formal complaint, had informed responsible managers of her suffering, the company would certainly have conducted an appropriate investigation.”

The statement further clarified, “MBC maintains a strict stance on workplace harassment, ensuring severe measures are taken. Investigations are initiated immediately upon receiving any reports or consultation requests, regardless of whether they come from freelancers or regular cast members.”

…Earlier, on 27 January, the Maeil Shinmun reported that Oh had left a letter detailing the workplace harassment she experienced from colleagues and senior weathercasters before her tragic death. On 28 January, KBS reported that the deceased's family had compiled phone call records and KakaoTalk messages to identify the alleged perpetrators of the harassment and filed a civil lawsuit against them.
