Thailand: 1,400+ Myanmar workers allegedly dismissed & threatened, global supplier Cal-Comp Electronics states it followed labour law; incl. cos. responses & non-responses

In October 2025, it was reported that over 1,400 migrant workers from Myanmar were dismissed without warning by Thai electronics manufacturing firm, Cal-Comp Electronics (part of Kinpo Group) in Phetchaburi. The workers were allegedly “confined” in the factory, subjected to threats of arrest, and coerced into signing termination papers in exchange for a lump sum payment of around USD308.

Workers allege the factory bribed Thai officials to overlook actions they say violate Thai labour law, including failure to provide advanced notice and coercion to sign the papers.

Reporting by The Irrawaddy also says many of the dismissed workers were charged recruitment fees by labour suppliers for their jobs. This follows previous reporting of excessive recruitment fee charging at Cal-Comp Electronics in 2019.

Reporting says Cal-Comp Electronics allegedly supplies to multiple multinational buyers, including Apple, Hitachi, HP and Konica Minolta. Reporting by non-profit organization PowerMentor calls on brands buying from Cal-Comp Electronics to act, including by investigating the supplier and ensuring workers are remediated.

In October, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Cal-Comp Electronics, Kinpo Group, Apple, Hitachi, HP and Konica Minolta to respond to the allegations. The Resource Centre additionally asked:

  • Cal-Comp Electronics to disclose the steps it has taken or will take to investigate and remedy workers for the abuses reported, including any efforts taken since previous reporting of abuse at the company to stop recruitment fee charging.
  • Kinpo Group (Cal-Comp Electronics' parent company) to disclose the steps it has taken or will take to investigate and remedy workers for the abuses reported, including any efforts taken since previous reporting of abuse at Cal-Comp Electronics to stop recruitment fee charging at Kinpo Group subsidiaries; and to disclose any human rights due diligence Kinpo Group undertakes to monitor working conditions at its subsidiaries.
  • The buyers to disclose the steps they have taken or will take to investigate and remedy workers for the abuses reported, including any efforts taken since previous reporting of abuse at the company to stop recruitment fee charging in their supply chains; and any steps they will take now in light of these new allegations; and to disclose any human rights due diligence they undertake prior to entering into contracts with suppliers, and when monitoring working conditions at suppliers.

Cal-Comp Electronics, Kinpo Group, Hitachi and Konica Minolta responded to the Resource Centre; their responses can be read in full below. In its response to the Resource Centre, Cal-Comp Electronics said it complied "fully" with Thai labour law and said it maintained 'open' communication with workers throughout the process. The company's response (attached below) provides links to Thai media sources, Khao Petchaburi 24 hours and Thai PBS, which it states "confirmed the lawful and transparent process of Cal-Comp’s workforce adjustment and the additional support provided to employees".

Apple and HP did not respond.
