Union of Concerned Scientists' rejoinder to Shell

"Shell’s response doubles down on the corporation’s campaign of deliberate disinformation that is documented in Decades of Deceit. Shell’s denial of having had “unique knowledge” of climate change is a thinly veiled effort to distract from the mounting body of evidence that Shell and other major fossil fuel corporations have long worked to deceive the public and block climate action—efforts that continue to this day.

In fact, Shell’s 1991 documentary Climate of Concern bolsters the case presented in Decades of Deceit. According to research by Jelmer Mommers and Damien Carrington published in De Correspondent in 2017, the film was intended for public viewing but remained unseen for years. Despite having detailed knowledge of the dangers its products posed to people and the planet, Shell failed to warn the public or take responsibility for its role in climate change by changing its own business model; instead, it actively obstructed the transition to a clean energy future."
