2026 webinars
Webinar 1: 29 September 2026 - Organised in partnership with Equidad Perú
Since their endorsement 15 years ago, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) have served as the global reference framework for state duties, corporate responsibilities, and access to remedy. Their voluntary nature has exposed some limitations, prompting states, civil society, and international bodies to explore hard‑law pathways to strengthen corporate liability and access to remedy for people affected by corporate harm, including the binding treaty on business and human rights. Ahead of the 12th session of the intergovernmental working group this October, this webinar set the stage for a forward‑looking discussion on corporate legal accountability, including the evolution of mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence (mHREDD) initiatives, as well as the potential of a treaty on communities' access to remedy.
Webinar 2: 6 October 2026 - Organised in partnership with InternetLab, Oversight Lab and TNI
While there is growing domestic and regional movement to regulate the tech sector, these approaches limitations given the cross-border nature of digital business models. Big Tech companies continue to challenge the limits of domestic and regional legal frameworks and judicial systems. An international legally binding instrument on business and human rights, such as the one under discussion at the UN, could potentially provide a clear global baseline of standards and help address persistent accountability gaps that enable tech companies to evade liability. This online roundtable explores whether and how a binding treaty on business and human rights could address the challenges posed by the tech sector.
2025 webinars
In October 2025, the Business and Human Rights Centre and FORUM-ASIA held a series of webinars titled “Treaty-making in troubled times” to continue spotlighting critical issues and amplifying the voices of civil society organisations in support of the UN binding treaty process during this critical period.
In the current context of regulatory rollbacks, the first webinar in this year’s series reflected on the importance of regulation and highlight the impact of deregulation on affected people in the Global South to hold companies accountable over human rights abuses. The second webinar examined what it means to create a victim-centred treaty, and how the treaty can address systemic and intersectional vulnerabilities.

Webinar 1: 7 October 2025 - Organised in partnership with: FORUM-ASIA
With the recent demise of the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), and regulatory rollbacks seen in some countries, the BHR community is left questioning: what’s next for corporate accountability and access to justice for victims? In this context, the UN Binding Treaty process may now carry renewed significance. Can a binding international instrument fill the regulatory vacuum left behind? Can it re-centre Global South voices that are often marginalised in domestic and regional regulatory efforts?
Webinar 2: 14 October 2025 - Organised in partnership with: FORUM-ASIA.
As treaty negotiations enter their 11th year, one of the most crucial questions remains: Who is the treaty really for? Articles 4 and 5 of the current draft treaty seek to define victims and their rights. Yet, there is growing recognition that these definitions must go beyond legal technicalities to meaningfully reflect lived experiences of harm, especially those of women, children, Indigenous Peoples, migrants, and people affected by conflict.
2024 webinars
2024 marked the 10-year anniversary of the adoption of the Human Rights Council resolution that created the Intergovernmental Working Group (IGWG) on a legally binding instrument on business and human rights. Drawing from our engagement with stakeholders on the binding treaty, we explored the opportunity of the treaty and remaining challenges in the text through reflection by legal experts in a three-part series of roundtable discussions.
