Rural worker and community leader, Kátia Martins, was shot five times in an ambush on Thursday night (4) in her own home, in northeast Pará, 130 kilometres from Belém. Katia was president of the Associação de Agricultores Familiares do assentamento and was murdered around 8 pm in front of her grandson. According to the Union of Rural Workers of Castanhal, the crime has all the characteristics of an execution. The two killers came on the motorcycle the moment she got home after a meeting. According to witnesses, Katia came running and asked for her grandchild to be spared. Kátia always stood out as the leader in the area.
