Etlevina López Vásquez is a community member and one of the founders of Chaparrí ecological reserve. In September 2018, she reported being a target under the new authorities in the community. She says she has been insulted, that her animals have been killed, and that the new members have tried to expel her from the community. “We have been very dedicated community members, but since the new directive came to power, the expulsions began, conflicts began, our voices were silenced – as if we did not exist,” she said. Leader of The Ronderos – self-governing peasant patrols – that monitor the area, Napoléon Tarrillo Astonitas, was killed in December 2017. Community says land invaders turned their attention to Chaparrí six years ago when plans to build La Montería reservoir in the area of Chaparrí ecological reserve- raising the possibility of agricultural expansion in the protected area.
