The indigenous leader of the Tolupán people and member of the Broad Movement for Dignity and Justice (Movimiento Amplio por la Dignidad y la Justicia), Ramón Matute, was a victim of an attempt on his life, allegedly by an employee of the company, reportedly owned by local businessman Wilder Domínguez, that allegedly illegally exploits the forest in the territory assigned to the Tolupán people. More recently, Ramon Matute, Jose María Pineda and Ángela Murillo have also been receiving increasing threats and have been excluded by their own community because of their opposition to logging in their ancestral territories. IM-Defenders and the National Network of Human Rights Defenders in Honduras (IM-Defensoras y la Red Nacional de Defensoras de DDHH en Honduras) condemned the situation: they say the Forest Conservation Institute (ICF), the Public Prosecutor's Office, the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders are ignoring it.
