On 11 February 2019, Froylán González, an indigenous peoples' rights defender, was detained by public servants of the State Electoral and Citizen Participation Institute (Instituto Estatal Electoral y de Participación ciudadana, IEEPCO) for 48 hours. The allegations against Froylan Gonzalez were 'damage to public property, injuries to a public employee and theft'. He was allegedly subjected to ill-treatment during the detention. CODEDI works on protecting the rights of indigenous peoples in cases where illegal logging, tourism, and extractive projects are a threat to their land and human rights. Front Line Defenders strongly condemned the 'illegal detention and the fabricated charges against Froylán González'.
