Homero Gómez was an environmental defender from Michoacán who dedicated his life to the conservation of forests and the protection of the Monarch butterflies who migrate to the region every year. He defended the protected land against the invasion of illegal loggers or others with interests in the territory. Although there have been no official results from the investigation, many have expressed that it was this activism that caused him to be killed on 13th January 2020.
