On 26 January, Fedor Morozov, an environmental activist was detained by police on the Red Square in Moscow while recording a video message about a construction of a landfill in Shies, Arkhangelsk region. The landfill is designed for shipments of garbage from Moscow. He was accused of violating the established procedure for organizing or holding public events. The court hearing is scheduled for 12 February. Local residents and environmental activists have been protesting against the landfill because they say the shipments will include highly hazardous waste and food that will emit toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide and methane. The released gases will allegedly poison the atmosphere for many kilometers in all directions and toxic filtrates will enter the regions’ water supply.
