Truong Thi Ha was a law student when she participated in the June 2018 protests – first on June 10 during the nation-wide protests against the draft laws on Cyber security and Special Economic Zone, and then on June 17, on which day Ha and many other activists became victims of a concerted and violent effort by the authorities to quell the demonstrations. By the end of June 10, many young people were arrested, terrorized, and had their phones confiscated. She was publicizing the right to protest, and offering free counsel for those who were arrested. On June 17, she was detained, beaten, and faced imminent risk of sexual assault. According to The 88 Project, at least 127 activists have been arrested, imprisoned, or otherwise harassed for their participation in those protests.
