Security firm G4S confirms involvement in Israel's occupation

The Danish-British security firm G4S recently confirmed in a letter its involvement in the Israeli occupation and violations of international law...After the publication of The Electronic Intifada's report on 15 December 2010, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre asked G4S to respond...G4S replied, confirming that it had withdrawn from contracts providing security officers to residential settlements in the West Bank in 2002. "However, we continue to serve major commercial customers, for instance supermarket chains, whose operations include the West Bank," the company stated...However, G4S fails to address that Israeli settlements serve an exclusively Jewish population and are built illegally on occupied Palestinian land. By providing security services to illegal settlement businesses, G4S facilitates Israel's violations of international law...[Business & Human Rights Resource Centre asked G4S if they wished to provide further comments. G4S said they have nothing to add to their earlier statement.]

Outcry in Denmark over firm's involvement in occupation

The Danish-British security firm G4S has come under scrutiny after it was revealed last month that it supplies equipment and services to Israel for use at checkpoints and settlements in the occupied West Bank and at Israeli prisons...the Israel Prison Service...detains thousands of Palestinian political prisoners. The outcry over G4S's role in the Israeli occupation was reported in the Danish media...Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Lene Espersen called on G4S "not to carry out activities that might help to sustain illegal settlements," as was reported in Danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende on 28 November...A number of large Danish pension funds hold shares in G4S...The Danish National Procurement Service (SKI)...has also asked G4S for a written explanation of the company's activities in the West Bank...Research...revealed that G4S has resumed its activities in the occupied West Bank. Hashmira's [part of G4S] armed security guards were seen on duty in a supermarket in Modiin Illit settlement and in the East Jerusalem settlement of Ramat Shlomo...By providing services to Israeli military checkpoints in the West Bank, G4S has contributed to Israel's violations of international law.

G4S delivers technology to Israeli prisons

Palestinian political prisoners are subjected to abuse and torture in Israeli prisons. G4S has provided both security and surveillance equipment to the prisons. According to a brochure from the company...G4S Technology has supplied security technology to seven Israeli prisons and two remand prisons located in Israel and on the occupied West Bank. Several of the prisons house so called security prisoners - a concept that according to the UN refers to political prisoners from Palestine...We are not made aware of which types of prisoners are held within the prisons that we provide systems for as this is a confidential matter for the Israeli Government, writes G4S in a response to DanWatch.
