AIDA hosts key workshop on human rights and environment protection

In May 2009, AIDA organized a two-day workshop in Panama on the use of international law and mechanisms to protect human rights and the environment in the Americas...Forty-five people representing over thirty NGOs and affected communities from twelve countries participated...Key to the workshop was an effort to develop strategies to address four actual human rights and environment problems in the region. The cases discussed were: in Panama, the Tavasará mega-dam and the Petaquilla gold mine; in Honduras, the Los Micos Beach & Old Resort, a huge tourism development in Afro-Caribbean territory; and, in Costa Rica, the pineapple industry's heavy use of pesticides.
