A global "patent pool" for AIDS drugs will be launched next year in a bid to slash…the cost of producing generic medicines for the developing world…the mechanism was given the green light at a board meeting in Geneva Monday...UNITAID will provide start-up funds…over the coming year, and has…held talks with…Gilead, Johnson and Johnson, Merck and Sequoia on signing up…Medecins Sans Frontieres welcomed "a decisive step to improve access to medicines in the developing world," but warned that success would depend on solid backing from drug firms…

Une "communauté de brevets" pour la production de médicaments à moindres coûts contre le sida va commencer à opérer à la mi-2010, a annoncé lundi soir la Facilité internationale d'achats de médicaments (Unitaid)... Cette création est le fruit de pourparlers avec les laboratoires pharmaceutiques comme Gilead, Tibotec (Johnson & Johnson), Merck et Sequoia, a précisé M. Douste-Blazy [président d'Unitaid]. L'annonce de la création de la communauté de brevets a été saluée par l'ONG Médecins sans frontières (MSF)... [mais le] "Patent pool sera jugé sur ses résultats pour les patients", a prévenu Mme Michelle Childs, directrice à MSF, en soulignant que son succès dépendra de l'engagement des laboratoires pharmaceutiques.
