Updating the Resource Centre Digital Platform

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre is at a critical point in its development. Our digital platform is home to a wealth of information on business and human rights, but hasn’t had a visual refresh for a number of years.

We will soon be updating the site to improve its usability and better serve the thousands of people that use our site to support their work.

Please take an advance peek at our new look, and let us know what you think!

Thank you,
Alex Guy, Digital Officer

Does your company have a publicly available commitment to respect human rights?

No. While we do not have a formal "policy" on human rights, we do have a Human Rights Statement, part of which may be found in the Corporate Responsibility (CR) Deck on our website ([link]). Our Corporate Values also embody our respect for human rights ([link]).

We are in the process of updating our website with expanded scope and content, which is expected to launch in January.

How are human rights governed in your company?

Risks to human rights are assessed in our Enterprise Risk Management process, which is reported through our Governance and Risk Committee of the Board of Directors.

How are human rights managed within your company?

In addition to a corporate commitment to respect human rights at our operations worldwide, human rights impact assessments may be conducted on an individual project-basis. Language consistent with our Human Rights Statement and designed to ensure the protection of human rights is routinely included in legal contracts with suppliers and contractors.

What is the company’s approach to the engagement of stakeholders (including workers, and local communities impacted by the company’s activities), on human rights issues?

We regularly communicate our Human Rights Statement to all interested and related stakeholders, including our contractors and suppliers. Additional examples of stakeholder engagement activities are available on our website and in the CR Deck as referenced in #1.

Priority human rights issues: What are some of the priority human rights issues for your company?

The company selected the following from a check list:

  • Health (including workplace health & safety, prevention of pollution)
  • Workplace diversity / non-discrimination
  • Forced labour and human trafficking (including in supply chains)
  • Sexual harassment
  • Displacement and community relocation
  • Transparency in payments to governments / responsible tax practices
  • Indigenous peoples

Actions on displacement and community relocation

We are committed to the responsible relocation of communities and individuals affected by the Mozambique Gas Development Project, which is currently the only area in the company’s portfolio where resettlement is required. For more information, please see [link].

How are human rights commitments and information about how the company addresses its human rights impacts communicated, internally and externally?

We communicate information regarding human rights primarily through our website, www.anadarko.com. The Corporate Responsibility section of this website is expected to be newly launched in January with expanded scope and content.

What provisions does your company have in place to ensure that grievances from workers and affected communities or individuals are heard, and can you provide examples of remedies provided?

In applicable operational areas we implement grievance mechanisms for local communities in an effort to listen to, track, manage, and respond to all inquiries within a prescribed period of time and within a culturally respectful fashion. These mechanisms provide valuable information for our operations teams as they develop and implement new facilities with lessened community footprints.
