Argentina: Federal Courts confirms decision against three former State employees over contamination of Barrick Gold’s Veladero mine

“Veladero:  Legal case against three former Kirchner employees confirmed over contamination”, 13 July 2018

An Argentinean Federal Court confirmed its decision against national public servants over their lack of control that ended in a cyanide solution spill at the Veladero mine, in San Juan…This decision was made by the Second Chamber of the Federal Court.  This process investigated former employees Sergio Lorusso, former Secretary of the environmental, Jorge Mayoral, former Secretary of Mines and Beatriz Domingorena, responsible for environmental control…All of them were public servants during the Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner…The events occurred on September 12-13, 2015 at the Veladero mine operated by Barrick (today associated with a Chinese firm), located in Iglesia.  In this place, there was a spill of 1072 cubic metres of cyanide solution.  This incident happened due to the leakage of a frozen ventilation valve…Problems did not end there, though, since the spill reached the basin of Potrerillos River because the gate at the diversion channel was opened, impeding that the product drained towards the contingency pool…
