Phase two of the Waigaoqiao plant [invested by China Guodian, Shenneng Holdings and Shanghai Holdings], which has two 900MW generating units…will save an annual one million tonnes of coal and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 2.1 million tonnes in comparison with a typical Chinese power station of the same size...China Huaneng Group, the nation’s biggest electricity producer, recently began construction of the first “ultra-supercritical” coal-fired power station...[The result is] higher efficiencies…and lower emissions than traditional coal-fired plants...China has become the world’s biggest sulphur dioxide polluter...“Increased sulphur dioxide emissions meant that one third of China’s territory was affected by acid rain, posing a major threat to soil and food safety,” said Sheng Huaren, vice-chairman of the NPC Standing Committee.
