Australia: Investigators recover more than $80,000 in unpaid wages owed to Subway employees

Fast food outlet Subway has copped heavy fines after a lengthy investigation found as many as 18 Australian franchises were guilty of underpaying workers. The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO)...announced it recovered $81,638.82 in unpaid wages for 167 Subway employees stretching back until 2017...

 ...The most recent debt recovery comes as the FWO continues to crackdown on the sandwich giant, who has been found guilty of underpaying workers up to $150,000 over the past two financial years...

...Among the breaches were a failure to pay minimum wages, missing entitlements such as holiday and overtime rates and failing to issue proper payslips...

...A spokesperson for Subway said..."Subway is extremely concerned with wage underpayment and does not tolerate deliberate wage theft...Since 2017, Subway has strengthened its employment education program for franchisees and restaurant workers with additional broad-ranging measures, including a dedicated employment hotline for employees and expert employment support services for franchisees. Subway has commenced a rolling proactive audit of franchisee employment records and has introduced stringent regular internal workplace review requirements for franchisees. Subway will continue to work closely with the Fair Work Ombudsman on any concerns raised by restaurant workers about wage and employment conditions."
