Australia: New report finds majority of migrant workers underpaid & unable to recover wages

A new report by authors Bassina Farbenblum, University of New South Wales, and Laurie Berg, University of Technology Sydney, Wage Theft in Silence: Why Migrant Workers Do Not Recover Their Unpaid Wages In Australia, reveals that the majority of the migrant workers receive below minimum wage. Very few workers, mostly international students and backpackers, took action to recover wages and fewer still were successful in recovering what they were owed. More than a quarter of the respondents said they would not speak up due to fear of losing their visa. The report urgently calls for a new, or improved, process for wage recovery.
