Baltimore-based lawyers win another key round for kidnap victim [USA]

A federal appeals court in Washington has opened the courthouse doors to a man who claims he was kidnapped and tortured [in the Philippines] for three weeks, while his employer kept his family in the dark and refused to pay a ransom — until his captors made good on a threat to cut off part of an ear. The court...rejected arguments from Parsons Global Services Ltd. [part of Parsons Corporation] that Azhar Ali Khan’s claims must go to an arbitrator rather than a judge... Parsons is not alleged to have participated in the kidnapping. The claim concerns only the company’s alleged negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress during Khan’s captivity and after his release...Parsons denies the allegations. A Parsons spokesperson said the...company is reviewing the decision and evaluating its options in the litigation.
