In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Accord on Fire and Building Safety, a legally binding agreement to improve workplace safety for garment workers in Bangladesh, was created... [O]ver 200 brands and retailers signed onto the agreement. The Accord [...] has made workplaces safer for two million garment workers in over 1,600 factories.

The first Accord is set to expire in 2018, with a second, renewed Accord due to start in May 2018. The renewed Accord will continue to build on the progress made by the original Accord, while also placing greater emphasis on the role that workers themselves can play in ensuring their workplaces are safe... The 2018 Accord will also allow for the scope of inspections to be expanded to include suppliers producing textiles, yarn, cloth, and other related products...
