Banking on sustainability: is the financial sector doing enough?

[T]he financial sector [is] still facing the challenge of how to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development instead of returning to (unsustainable) business as usual when the crisis is...behind us...But there are some positive developments. Many leading banks...have adopted policy positions on sensitive issues and introduced social and environmental criteria in risk management processes. There's a growing volume of research, especially on climate change, and finance for clean/green technology...But all this is tiny in the context of global banking operations...[I]f sustainability isn't built into the strategies being developed now it will be too late once the good times roll again.
