Bankwatch complaint on abuse of environmental laws leads to suspension of EIB financing for Slovak motorway

Following a complaint lodged by Friends of the Earth-CEPA...over breaches of EU and national environmental laws...in the preparation of a section of the D1 motorway project...the European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced that the bank will not sign off on EUR 700 million of financing for the project until all relevant documentation is provided by the Slovak Ministry of Transport...Friends of the Earth-CEPA...pointed to the fact that a less damaging routing variant for the motorway section...recommended by the project's environmental impact assessment was overlooked in favour of an alternative routing...running through the village of Sutovo...Friends of the Earth-CEPA has also been in communication with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) regarding problematic aspects of the D1 motorway construction. According to its website, the EBRD will decide on a EUR 250 million loan for sections of the D1 under a public-private partnership scheme in May 2010.
