Botswana report finds extensive child sex abuse

Sexual exploitation of children is reportedly rampant in the northern part of Botswana… Findings of a recent study [by Childline Botswana]…suggest that older men working in farms and the construction industry…are taking advantage of the children…[M]ost of these are children from poor backgrounds, lacking parental support and guidance both financially and socially… The interventions used in the programme involved withdrawing the children from work situations… as well as enabling the provision of support services, such as those related to health, nutrition, shelter, counselling and the payments of stipends… Another objective set for the 2010-2012 project was to remove 200 child labourers from the agricultural and commercial sexual exploitation sectors and reintegrate them into mainstream society.
