Protesters block Brazil power plant

About 300 indigenous protesters have surrounded a hydroelectric plant under construction in the Brazilian Amazon city of Aripuana, preventing 100 workers from leaving the site...the indigenous...object to the Dardanelos dam being built on an ancient burial ground. The protesters have demanded $5.6 million in compensation for cultural and social losses and a tract of hunting grounds..."The site is 30 kilometres from our reserve and has caused great cultural and social impact in our community, not to mention environmental damage."...Talks between different Amazon tribes and the Aguas da Pedra power company broke down recently...a company manager said the indigenous were seeking access to better living conditions in the region and were trying to attract attention for their demands. "These are problems the state needs to solve," he said.

Pertrechados con sus armas artesanales...los indígenas capturaron a los trabajadores que construyen la hidroeléctrica de Dardanelos...y los recluyeron en los barracones en los que se alojan. "Los indígenas en ningún momento amenazaron sus vidas. Pidieron tranquilamente que fueran a sus alojamientos”, dijo a Efe Antonio Carlos Ferreira de Aquino...Los indios reclaman compensaciones por parte de las autoridades por el impacto social, cultural y ambiental de la obra, ubicada a 30 kilómetros de su reserva. Ferreira de Aquino explicó que la empresa constructora “dinamitó” parte de un sitio arqueológico considerado como sagrado por los pueblos de la región.
